ProtoneX: Advancing the Future of Clean Energy with PEM Water Electrolysis Technology

2024-11-05

Hydrogen is gaining recognition as a clean, low-carbon energy source essential to the global energy transition, and water electrolysis stands at the forefront of hydrogen production technologies. ProtoneX, a leading manufacturer of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, is committed to advancing this critical technology, which splits water into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂) using direct current.

Under standard conditions, one cubic meter of hydrogen contains 12.74 MJ of energy, and theoretically, only 3.54 kWh of electricity is needed to produce hydrogen via electrolysis. However, due to inherent energy losses, actual efficiency is slightly lower. The efficiency of water electrolysis depends on the performance of the electrolyzer and the efficiency of supporting systems. ProtoneX’s advanced PEM electrolyzers are designed for high efficiency, with single-cell voltages controlled below 1.8V, significantly improving overall performance.

PEM electrolyzers are particularly well-suited for intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, due to their flexibility and low operating costs. However, electrolyzer efficiency is influenced by factors such as current density and temperature. Lower current density and higher temperatures can help reduce the single-cell voltage, increasing efficiency. ProtoneX focuses on optimizing these parameters, ensuring that our PEM electrolyzers operate at industry-leading efficiencies ranging from 74% to 82%, with electricity consumption between 4.3 and 4.8 kWh/m³ (under standard conditions).

To further improve efficiency, the ProtoneX team is exploring next-generation materials, innovative electrolyzer designs, and enhanced operational strategies. As renewable energy costs continue to decline, using clean energy such as wind and solar power to supply electricity for electrolysis will further reduce both the carbon footprint and cost of hydrogen production.

ProtoneX is proud to be at the cutting edge of water electrolysis technology, helping drive the global transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
